We chose Connie as our October Substitute of the Month because she is a tremendously helpful substitute teacher. She takes last-minute assignments with a positive attitude. She is friendly, kind, and funny, and has built great relationships with the school staff and students. Connie is very deserving of this recognition.
For many years, the halls of Piper Schools have felt like a second home to Connie. With a bright smile and a calm presence, she has become a familiar face to countless students and teachers alike. “I’ve always had a strong passion for education,” Connie says. “There’s something special about being part of a child’s learning journey — even if it’s just for a day.”
Connie and Ray share a blended family of five children, and family is at the center of everything she does. When she’s not in the classroom, you’ll find her volunteering in her community, serving at her church, working as a barista, or spending quality time with her loved ones.
Her path to substitute teaching began with a simple desire — to stay connected to education while maintaining flexibility for her family and other passions. “I wanted a way to contribute without being tied to a full-time schedule,” she explains. “Subbing has allowed me to do that while building meaningful relationships with students and staff.”
Over the years, Connie has collected countless memories — some funny, some heartwarming, all unforgettable. She treasures the moments when students stop her in the hallway just to say hello or thank her for being there. “Sometimes it’s the smallest gestures — a note, a smile, or being recognized at Walmart or the Legends — that remind me how much these kids notice and appreciate you.” Watching students light up when they spot her cheering them on at after-school events is another highlight. “It’s those connections outside the classroom that make this role so rewarding.”
Every day as a substitute brings something new, and that’s exactly what Connie loves about it. She approaches each assignment with enthusiasm and preparedness — key ingredients to a smooth day. Her advice for other substitutes? “Be flexible, patient, and ready for anything,” she says with a laugh. “Get there early to look over plans, introduce yourself confidently, and set clear expectations right away.”
But above all, Connie believes in leading with kindness. “Treat every student with understanding — it really goes a long way,” she says. “And don’t be afraid to ask for help! The admin and teachers at Piper are wonderful and are always ready to step in. I couldn’t ask for better support.”
For Connie, substitute teaching isn’t just a job — it’s a calling filled with laughter, learning, and lasting connections. Each classroom she enters is another chance to make a difference, one student at a time.
