If you’ve been thinking about stepping into the classroom as a substitute teacher—but assumed you needed a college degree to do so—there’s good news. Thanks to a recent decision by the Kansas Board of Education, there’s now a permanent, more accessible path to the classroom: the Expanded Emergency Substitute License.

This updated license makes it easier for people who are passionate about education, helping kids, or just looking for a flexible job that gives back, to get started—even if they don’t have 60 college credit hours.

Whether you’re a recent high school grad, a stay-at-home parent, someone pivoting careers, or just curious about what it takes to be a substitute teacher, this guide breaks down everything you need to know.

What Are the Current Sub Teacher Requirements in Kansas?

Traditionally, Kansas required substitute teachers to have at least 60 college credit hours from an accredited institution. That’s still an option if you meet the criteria. But for those who don’t, the Expanded Emergency Substitute License opens up a new route—one that’s now permanent, thanks to a 2025 vote from the Kansas State Board of Education.

This alternative path replaces college coursework with a free online training course. It allows you to substitute in one approved school district, and still requires a background check and TB test to keep students safe.

Step-by-Step: How to Get the Expanded Emergency Substitute License

We know that licensing requirements can feel overwhelming—so let’s break it down into a few clear steps.

Step 1: Complete the Free Online Training

Go to Greenbush Training Course and complete the training modules. When you finish the final quiz, you’ll get a certificate of completion.
Tip: Save that certificate! You’ll need to upload it later.

Step 2: Apply for the License with KSDE

Visit the Kansas Department of Education website to create an account and submit your application.

In the “Name of College/University” dropdown, select “Greenbush – Modified Emergency Substitute.”

Step 3: Complete Fingerprinting

Fingerprinting is required for all applicants. Details and instructions can be found here.

Step 4: Apply with Morgan Hunter Education

Once you’ve submitted your state license application, head over to our MHE application and complete it.

You’ll need to upload:

  • Your Greenbush Certificate
  •  A copy of your High School Diploma (or send it to us via email)

“We’re seeing a lot of incredible applicants who didn’t previously qualify. This license has opened the door to more passionate individuals who just needed a more accessible path.”
— Angela Hunt, Program Director, Morgan Hunter Education

Step 5: Interview + District Approval

If your application looks good, we’ll schedule a virtual interview. If all goes well, we’ll coordinate with the district of your choice to get you approved to work there.

Note: Once the district signs off, the license will take a few weeks to process through the state.

Step 6: Orientation + TB Test

Once your license comes through, you’ll join us at Morgan Hunter Education for a Pre-Employment Meeting. Think of it as your substitute teaching crash course—we cover:

  • Classroom management tips
  • Policies & procedures
  • How to use our scheduling software

Before you can start subbing, you’ll also need to provide a negative TB test result.

“Orientation gives new subs the confidence they need to walk into the classroom on Day 1. We cover everything—because when you’re prepared, the students benefit too.”
— Angela Hunt, Program Director, Morgan Hunter Education

Who Is This New License Perfect For?

This license is ideal for people who:

  • Have a high school diploma but not 60+ college credit hours
  • Want to explore teaching before committing to an education degree
  • Are looking for flexible work with meaningful impact
  • Have recently retired or are returning to the workforce
  • Are passionate about helping kids learn and grow

Why Substitute Teaching?

We talk to substitute teachers every day, and their reasons for doing this work are as diverse as the people themselves. Some love the flexibility. Others enjoy being part of the school community without the pressure of full-time teaching. And many see it as a stepping stone to something bigger.

“Whether it’s for a season or a stepping stone to full-time teaching, substitute teaching can be one of the most rewarding roles you’ll ever have.”
— Angela Hunt, Program Director, Morgan Hunter Education
