Each quarter we like to highlight one of our substitute teachers who has a fun or interesting story or background. This quarter we are highlighting Katie Stewart.
In 2011 Katie went on a six-week road trip all by herself. She wanted to do something outside of her comfort zone and thought this might be a great adventure. Over the six-week period, Katie visited 7 states – Texas, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, California and Utah. She went into the trip without much of a plan. She knew she wanted to go to Texas and California, but the rest of the trip was completely unplanned, and she just took it day by day.
Some of her favorite parts of the trip included the scenic drive into the Red Rock Mountains which she said was, “breathtaking”. She also loved the Pacific Coast Highway in California and some of the National Parks that she visited, specifically Zion National Park in Utah. Meeting different people from all the different states was also a very rewarding part of the trip. Since she was alone, she engaged more with people than she normally would on a trip and met some really nice people.
Outside of taking road trips, Katie especially enjoys spending time with her husband and children. Katie has a 9-year-old daughter and 2 stepdaughters; one is at KU and the other is a junior in high school. As a family they love watching KU and Chiefs games, hanging out at the pool, traveling (of course) and playing board games.
Katie has been a great substitute teacher for our team since February of 2024. She works in the Lawrence school district, mainly in the elementary schools. She enjoys the rewards of helping children find different ways to
solve problems and loves going into a different classroom each time she works.
Thank you, Katie, for sharing your story with the MHED team!
