Every month, we highlight one of our staff members so you can get to know the MHED team a little bit better. This month we spoke with Administrative Assistant Teri Vahey!

Tell us about your family and your background?

I am a twin and we were born in Heidelberg, Germany, my dad was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army. We returned to Missouri when we were 2. I have lived in Missouri my whole life until a month ago when my husband Derek surprised me and said we are moving to Kansas for his job! We will get back to that later….

While living in St. Louis for the last 40 + years, I have experienced a lot! While going to high school and college, I helped my mom battle ovarian cancer. We both succeeded: she beat cancer three times and I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in public communications at Webster University.

I then had multiple fun jobs in the catering/event planning industry. Then, I had to take a break to help my dad who was diagnosed with ALS. He gave it his all for four years, but unfortunately, on Valentine’s Day 2002, Cupid needed him more than we did.

I then met my husband of 15 years the following year! Speaking of my husband, he left a 19-year career in the school bus business in St. Louis for a promotion/opportunity with a competitor bus dealer in Bonner Springs, Kansas. So we (my husband Derek, our 5lb., 15-year-old cat Angel and I) are excited to be here on this new adventure in Kansas!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Finding new wineries and trying new restaurants with my husband. Boating at the Lake of the Ozarks, working-out, scrapbooking with my twin, and going back to see my family in St. Louis.

What is your favorite part about working at MHED?

Love the team atmosphere!

What have been some of your biggest accomplishments in life thus far?

Getting my bachelor’s degree at Webster University and moving to Kansas and starting a new life with my husband.

What is something on your bucket list?

  • Driving to Kansas from St. Louis by myself, completed in September
  • Touring the wineries at Napa Valley
  • Learning how to play golf
  • Being a contestant on “The Price is Right”
  • Retiring at the Lake of the Ozarks

What is one thing you would like substitute teachers to know about you?

I am here to help them succeed because children are our future!
