education, elementary school, learning and people concept - teacher helping school kids writing test in classroom
For some substitute teachers, summer is a welcomed break — a chance to travel, catch up on projects around the house, lounge at the pool, or spend time with family. For others, it’s an opportunity to make some extra cash. But unless you are able to get substitute jobs for summer school, you need to find other avenues for your extra income.

Here are 5 ways substitute teachers can make money during summer break:

Tutoring

Even though school’s out, some kids still need extra help over the summer. They may be in summer school, or their parents might know that keeping their child’s skills sharp over the summer will give them an edge come next school year. Tutoring offers much of the same flexibility as substitute teaching. You could start your own tutoring business, or work with an established company. And if you choose to tutor students online instead of in-person, you won’t even have to leave home!

Work at a Summer Camp

Continue to work with kids over the summer by becoming a camp counselor. Working at a summer camp is a great chance to enjoy the outdoors after spending nine months in a classroom. Check out the American Camp Association’s website for nationwide camp counselor opportunities, or contact your local YMCA to see if they have any openings.

Institute of Reading Development

If you’re an English teacher, or just love to read, consider working for the Institute of Reading Development. The Institute of Reading Development is contracted by universities, school districts and other organizations to teach reading programs to students. They provide paid training and support, while you gain teaching experience. The only requirements are a bachelor’s degree, reliable transportation and a webcam to participate in video meetings. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, apply today!

Tour Guide

Is your city a tourist destination? If so, becoming a tour guide for the summer could be a great way to supplement your summer income. Many online job boards have postings for tour guides, or you could check with your local tour companies to see if they have any openings. It will help if you are knowledgeable about your local city’s landmarks in advance.

Dog Sitting

If you’re an animal lover, dog sitting could be the perfect way for you to make some extra income over the summer. Many people will be vacationing over summer break, and they will be looking for somewhere to take their dog while they’re away. It could be as simple as making a post on Facebook telling your friends that you’re available to watch their furry family members while they’re out of town. Or you could go throw an established company like Rover.com to find dogs to watch. Simply create a profile, establish your availability, and wait for dog owners to contact you.

Have a Great Summer!

Summer is a great opportunity for substitute teachers to make some extra money. And many of the jobs will allow you to use your current skill set as a teacher. But don’t forget to enjoy some time for yourself this summer — the start of the new school year will be here before you know it!
